AIDA – Tanglewood Festival
Reviews about AIDA – Tanglewood Festival - 20.08.2016
Boston Classical Review, 21.08.2016
The lower voices clearly owned the evening, Violeta Urmana’s smoky mezzo sound and passionate intensity strongly resonated as the Egyptian princes Amneris. She utilized her musical ant theatrical resources adroitly and made every note and dramatic utterance count.
The Boston Musical Intelligencer, 22.08.2016
Verdi gave an even harder dramatic task to Amneris, the King’s daughter, who also is in love with Radamés and consequently suspicious of his attention to Aida. To evoke the emotions of the opera’s main heavy, the mezzo playing Amneris has to overcome the audience’s dislike of the character if she is to realize the full force of her key role at the opera’s tragic end (not part of this production). None of this was any problem for large-voiced Lithuanian singer Violeta Urmana, who also was making her BSO and Tanglewood debut.
Arts Talk, 21.08.2016
Mezzo Violeta Urmana showed easy comfort across the broad range of her voice. Her Amneris felt like the only character onstage with motivation and growth.
The Boston Globe, 22.08.16
On Saturday night, the role of Amneris, Aida’s rival for the love of Radamès, was sung by the Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Violeta Urmana, with ample power and appealingly dusky colorings.
